Updates & Highlights from the fasting venue:

No. 153 LB rd, near Adayar Bus Depot,

Next to HDFC bank,

Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai

  1. Chennai is the only place in the country that has been able to start and continue fast for Jan Lokpal since Aug 16th. Today, our indefinite fasters have entered their 4th day. Profiles of the fasters will be available later this morning. Please visit our website for constant updates. The doctor checked the fasters this morning. 34 people are fasting today, with two new people who moved from the relay fast to indefinite fasting. Most of these people are continuing on their fourth day. One person was advised by the doctor to withdraw. Rest are health-wise doing fine and in very good spirits.
  2. Yesterday, Former Chief Election Commissioner T.S. Krishnamoorthy came to meet the indefinite fasters and supporters at the fasting venue. He gave a rousing speech on the importance of the movement in the history of Independent India. He said, “We must not let this movement fade.” Later addressing the media, in response to a question if the movement was largely middle-class, he retorted that middle-class is a sizable population in this country. It is significant that they have arisen to the occasion. After all, he said, the “every citizen in India, whether rich or poor is against corruption.” He hoped that a strong anti-corruption bill will soon be passed.
  3. In spite of the sudden rainshowers, the evening candlelight vigil went on as usual. The attendance of college students has increased dramatically at the venue with several more college students joining in. One of the local colleges organized a bike rally. The interesting part of the rally was the discipline the bikers showed as not a single traffic violation or disturbance was reported. They entered the venue in a very disciplined manner which highlighted the non-violent and peaceful nature of the movement.
  4. Today’s highlights:
    1. Veteran Parliamentarian Sri Era Chezhian will be coming to the venue to meet the fasters and show his support at 3 pm today.
    2. A college rally is being planned. Media will be updated as soon as we know.
    3. The lawyers will be going on dharna at High Court at 1:30 pm today.

I am an academic with interest in gender and intercultural communication, specifically on issues of marginalization of groups and individuals. While research is my first passion, I enjoy teaching greatly. Community work feeds my soul and keeps me alive.

I am all for civic participation in parliamentary processes and advocate for a strong Jan Lokpal bill. I find people's voices have been muted in this country and that We the People have to rise.

I hope for a corruption-free India and am here to do my bit to create one! Janlokpal Jaihind!
