PRESS RELEASE

Updates from the fasting venue:

No. 153 LB rd, near Indra Nagar Bus Depot,

Next to HDFC bank,

Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai

Our indefinite fasters are on their 3rd day and the doctor checked them this morning. They are health-wise doing fine and several in cheerful spirits. Our fasters range from 18 years to 81 years of age and include a female faster.

There is an outpouring of public support from the city of Chennai. This morning a group of elderly housewives showed up from the neighbourhood. Rama Subalakshmi, a 61 year-old housewife said that she was here because “although I cannot do indefinite fast or campaign like others, I can come and sit for few hours and show support.” Families have been showing up with babies and young children. The elderly also showed great enthusiasm. One 88 year-old man, Sri. D. Ramamurthy, secretary of Federation of Investors Associations, said that he is not new to fighting in social movements. An avid RTI activist, he has been fighting cases in Supreme court on behalf of investors who have been cheated of their deposits. He says, that the anti-corruption movement is very close to his heart. To be noted, he had fasted for a day on Aug 16.

College students have started pouring in and they usually come in a big group shouting slogans to the resounding applause from the public at the venue. More are expected as the classes end in the afternoon. There is a bike rally organized by the students starting from 4 pm at TCS Karappakkam covering IT Highway which will end after a city-wide rally at the fasting avenue at Adayar.

Volunteers are very happy that Anna has been allowed to fast at Ramlila maidan. We are looking forward to continuing our second freedom struggle. We want Jan Lokpal!

We will have a 7 pm candlelight vigil at the fasting venue. Eminent people may be in attendance. Please stand by for more information.

Our demands:

  1. Withdrawal of Jokepal.
  2. Introduction of Jan Lokpal bill in the parliament or conduct a nationwide referendum on the issue.

I am an academic with interest in gender and intercultural communication, specifically on issues of marginalization of groups and individuals. While research is my first passion, I enjoy teaching greatly. Community work feeds my soul and keeps me alive.

I am all for civic participation in parliamentary processes and advocate for a strong Jan Lokpal bill. I find people's voices have been muted in this country and that We the People have to rise.

I hope for a corruption-free India and am here to do my bit to create one! Janlokpal Jaihind!
